Upon arrival in Phnom Penh, an experienced English-speaking tour guide will accompany you to explore the city's top attractions. Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, is located at the meeting point of the Mekong, Tonle Sap, and Bassac rivers. Known as the "Pearl of Asia" in the early 20th century, it serves as the country's political, economic, and cultural center. The city features key landmarks like the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, reflecting Cambodia’s history. A blend of French colonial and modern architecture, along with vibrant markets, makes Phnom Penh a dynamic and evolving urban hub. It is also a center for arts, education, and business, attracting tourists with its historical sites and scenic riverside views.
The Royal Palace is a prominent symbol of Phnom Penh, renowned for its architectural grandeur. Construction began in 1886, following King Norodom's decision to relocate the royal capital to Phnom Penh, and was completed prior to World War I. The palace remains the official residence of the King of Cambodia to this day.
The stunning Silver Pagoda is situated beside the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling streets of Cambodia's capital. Surrounded by a beautiful garden, it provides a serene escape. Inside, the pagoda dazzles with its floor covered in intricately handcrafted silver tiles. It is also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, as its centerpiece is a remarkable Buddha statue made of emerald or baccarat crystal.
The Independence Monument in Phnom Penh, built in 1958, honors Cambodia's independence from France in 1953. Standing 37 meters tall at the intersection of Norodom and Sihanouk Boulevards, it features a lotus-shaped stupa inspired by Khmer architecture. Designed by architect Vann Molyvann, the monument serves as the focal point of national celebrations, with a ceremonial flame often lit by officials. It is a popular site for both locals and tourists year-round.
The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh is a former school turned into Security Prison 21 (S-21) by the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979. During this time, an estimated 20,000 people were imprisoned and tortured. Known as "Hill of the Poisonous Trees," Tuol Sleng was one of many Khmer Rouge prisons. In 2010, the chief of the prison, Kang Kek Iew (alias Duch), was convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Situated atop a 27-meter-high hill, Wat Phnom is the only elevated spot in Phnom Penh. Legend has it that the first pagoda was built in 1373 to house four Buddha statues found by a woman named Penh, which had been deposited by the Mekong River. The main entrance to the pagoda is through a grand eastern staircase, flanked by lion statues and naga (snake) balustrades.
