The Giza pyramid complex, also referred to as the Giza necropolis, is located on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt. This iconic site includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, as well as their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. These remarkable structures were built during the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt’s Old Kingdom, between approximately 2600 and 2500 BC. The area also features multiple cemeteries and the remnants of a village that once housed the workers who built the pyramids. Positioned on the edge of the Western Desert, the complex lies about 9 kilometers west of the Nile River in Giza and around 13 kilometers southwest of central Cairo. Together with the nearby ancient city of Memphis, the Giza Plateau was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

The Great Sphinx of Giza is the most renowned of its kind. Carved directly from the bedrock during Egypt’s 4th Dynasty (circa 2613–2494 BC), it is also the oldest known sphinx. In ancient Egyptian tradition, sphinxes symbolized the king, combining a human head with a lion’s body to represent strength and royal authority.

The Egyptian Museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East and is home to the world’s most extensive collection of Pharaonic artifacts. Its vast exhibits span from the Predynastic Period through to the Greco-Roman era. The museum’s architectural design was selected through the region’s first international competition in 1895, which was won by French architect Marcel Dourgnon. Officially opened in 1902, the inauguration was led by Khedive Abbas Helmy II. Since then, the museum has become an iconic landmark in downtown Cairo, showcasing some of the most extraordinary relics from ancient Egypt.
