Paestum is known throughout the world for its magnificent temples. There are 4 main doors leading to the sacred area, 9 meters wide and paved with large limestone blocks. On both sides were the public areas and living areas of the city. There are three Doric temples that have miraculously come down to us in excellent condition. The temple of Hera is the oldest of the three, it belongs to the first generation of large stone temples: its construction began around 560 BC. Then we have the temple of Athena, the only one of which the divinity to which it is dedicated is known with certainty, it is located north of the public spaces and was built on the highest point of the city around 500 BC. The largest and most majestic temple is the temple of Neptune, built in the mid-5th century BC. It is built with enormous boulders connected to each other by simple dowels and without mortar: this technique probably allowed the temple to overcome earthquakes and calamities.
