The Hungarian National Museum was founded in 1802 by Count Ferenc Széchényi, who donated his personal collection of books, manuscripts, and antiquities to the nation. This generous act laid the foundation for what would become Hungary’s premier historical museum. The museum officially opened to the public in 1847, housed in a grand neoclassical building designed by architect Mihály Pollack.
